Overview

The Environment is one of our 10 main research themes. Find out about what we do, and which members of staff are involved.

The risks and benefits of synthetic biology are still at the forefront of debate in the field.

The potential benefits are clear. Engineered organisms can provide solutions in areas such as:

  • bioremediation
  • water treatment
  • agriculture

The potential risks are unclear. The risks of releasing complex engineered organisms into the environment are still to be fully explored.

The release of genetically engineered organisms is still an issue for public concern. It is an area for public engagement.
