Politics students at Newcastle University have been showcasing the research they have been carrying out with a range of local charities and voluntary organisations.

Community Based Research in Politics began in 2015 as an initiative to provide students with hands-on research experience focusing on important social issues.

The initiative is available to students as an alternative to a traditional final year dissertation and enhances student employability.

Students become aware of policy processes, contribute to that process, and gain insight into the challenging environment in which the third sector operates.

Stage 2 and 3 students, presented their research at the Community Based Research Annual Conference on Tuesday 16 May.

The Conference welcomed representatives from charitable organisations who students have been collaborating with over the past academic year.

John Anderson, former Newcastle United player and BBC Radio Newcastle commentator attended on behalf of Show Racism the Red Card, along with representatives from Citizens Advice Newcastle, Wearside Women in Need, St Oswald’s Hospice, Youth Focus North East and Gibside National Trust.

Since its inception, the students in Community Based Research in Politics have conducted a wide range of research on diverse topics such as spatial justice, food poverty and generational divides.

The Politics Department has partnered with over 25 charitable organisations and forged strong bonds with the local community throughout. We value our partner organisations and all that they do to help our students grow as individuals and develop the transferable skills necessary to succeed after they leave university.
