Bethany became a Lecturer in Criminal Law at Newcastle Law School in September 2021. Prior to this, she undertook her PhD at Northumbria Law School where she explored the defences available to victims of human trafficking and modern slavery who commit offences. She obtained her Integrated Masters in Law with First Class Honours from Northumbria University in 2015.
Bethany's teaching aligns with her research interests in criminal law and criminology. Since teaching KS3/GCSE students as part of the Brilliant Club's National Tutoring Programme, Bethany has been passionate about widening access and participation for students from non-privileged backgrounds. She is currently involved in the Pathways to Law programme and PARTNERS Academic Summer School, two widening participation initiatives within the Law School, and School Tasking, the pro bono project which enables young people to learn about the law through fun, interactive sessions led by undergraduate students.
Bethany's research interests are in the area of human trafficking and modern slavery law, substantive defences - particularly compulsion-based defences, and sexual offences. She is also interested in comparative research in these areas.
