United Nations' Institute for Training and Research

Immersion programme for postgraduate students

As part of our continuous efforts to develop our students' professional skills, we have recently been in discussions with the United Nations' Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) about the design of an immersion programme specifically for Newcastle University postgraduate students.

The programme will allow students to visit the United Nations and other international organisations based in Geneva for one week. During this time students will have the opportunity to attend sessions and workshops on contemporary global issues such as human rights, the environment, AI and armed conflict, delivered by representatives of United Nations agencies.

As part of the activities students will have the opportunity to attend meetings held by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development, as well as by treaty human rights monitoring bodies such as the Committee on the Discrimination against Women.

Importantly, some of the workshops are designed to enhance professional skills such as negotiation, leadership, public speaking and diplomacy.

Participating in this immersion programme is completely optional to your LLM studies but does involve an additional cost, which will be provided at the start of the academic year.
