Dr Jiarong Zhang

Jiarong joined Newcastle Law School in the autumn of 2024. Her recent research interests include Intellectual Property Law, IP Law and Emerging/Digital Technologies, IP Law and Cultural Production, Critical IP Theory, and IP Legal History.
From 2022 to 2024, Jiarong was an Assistant Professor in Intellectual Property Law at the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin (The University of Dublin), Ireland. At Trinity Law School, she taught several LLB and LLM modules, designed and developed a new module, supervised LLB and LLM degree dissertations, and co-supervised PhD projects. She also served the school as the Deputy Director of the LLM Program, the Erasmus Coordinator (incoming), and the contact point with the European Intellectual Property Office and European Patent Office.
In 2023, Dr Amy Thomas (CREATe, University of Glasgow) and Jiarong were awarded £13,361 by the Carnegie Trust for the project 'A Case Study of Robert Burns: Presenting a Distinct Theoretical Foundation for Scottish Copyright Law.' In 2023, Jiarong was awarded € 3000 by Trinity College Dublin for the project 'Data Monopoly and the Construction of the ‘Metaverse.’
From 2018 to 2022, Jiarong pursued her PhD in Law at the School of Law and the CREATe Centre, University of Glasgow, Scotland. She was issued the Reviewer Certificate by the Journal of World Intellectual Property, the Certificate of Advanced Course on Intellectual Property, Traditional Knowledge, and Traditional Cultural Expressions and the Certificate of General Course on Intellectual Property by the World Intellectual Property Organisation Academy.
Earlier than this, she obtained an LLM by Research degree at the School of Intellectual Property, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an LLB degree at the School of Law, Nankai University, China. At the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, she worked as a research assistant and participated in several research projects funded by China National Intellectual Property Administration, the Supreme People’s Court of China, and the China Ministry of Science and Technology. She also worked as a Tutor at the World Intellectual Property Organisation Academy and as a Trainee Lawyer at Beijing Dentons Law Firm after succeeding in the Chinese National Judicial Examination in 2015.
