Student Visa extension for postgraduate research students

Student Visa extension

If you are a postgraduate research student who has a visa expiring in the next 4 months, and you would like to extend your Student Visa to enable you to complete your programme of study, please ensure you read the information below carefully.

Submit a CAS request

You will need a new CAS number to apply for a Student Visa extension.

Please follow the steps on this page to request a new CAS number.

On the same page, you can also request for our guide to help you prepare the Student Visa application.

Apply for ATAS

If your programme requires ATAS, you must apply for fresh ATAS clearance. You should do this immediately, as there are often significant delays with ATAS clearance and your clearance may take several weeks to be issued. We cannot issue a CAS without fresh ATAS clearance, but you should still submit your CAS request while you wait for your ATAS certificate to be issued.

You should ensure that you apply for ATAS clearance as a postgraduate research student, not a researcher. Please use your research statement to help you to complete the ATAS application form.

Proving your right to study

It is a UKVI requirement that the University holds evidence of a student’s right to study in the UK. We will require evidence of your visa application and then your new immigration permission to confirm your continuing right to study.

Please see the Visa Support Team web pages for details of how to submit evidence of both your visa application and your new visa. You must submit evidence of your visa application or new visa before your current visa expires, even if you are changing your immigration permission.

If we do not receive evidence of your ongoing right to study in the UK before your visa expires, we may suspend your access to some University facilities and, in some cases, remove your registration from your programme.

Remaining in the UK after your visa expires

If you are in the UK and do not apply for a new visa before your current visa expires, you will be classed as an overstayer. Overstaying can have serious consequences for your stay in the UK and for any future immigration permission.

If you are unable to apply for a student visa, or you are unable to make an in-time application for non-student immigration permission to stay in the UK, you must leave the UK before your current immigration permission expires.

If you have any queries about your immigration status or how to apply for a student visa, please contact the Visa Support Team for advice.

If you are no longer in the UK

If you have returned home, or intend to return home to complete your studies and will not be returning to campus you should complete the Outside Study application to confirm this.
