Our degrees

We offer a range of bioscience degree programmes.

If you are not sure which area will suit you best, follow our Biomedical Sciences (Deferred Choice) route. This allows you to select your specialism in your second year of study.  You can also view Frequently asked questions and Why Choose Us for further information.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry BSc Honours - C700 (3 years)

Biochemistry Integrated Masters - C701 (4 years)

Biochemistry is the branch of science concerned with the chemical process that occur within living organisms, you study life at the molecular level.

Our course covers how genes and proteins regulate cells, tissues and ltimately whole organisms like you.  You will study a wide range of organisms from bacteria to humans. You also learn about the molecular basis of the structure and processes of life.

The four year Integrated Masters programme offers a choice of Masters modules and you will undertake an extensive final year research project in one of our world class research institutes.

You can also undertake a professional placement year or study overseas placement year whilst studying on either of these degree programmes.

“One of the focuses of our third year Applied Biochemistry module is to look at the real-world applications of biochemistry, and as part of the module we visit a local BioTechnology company. The trip involves a tour of the plant rooms, analytical, process development and optimisation labs and several talks from employees to highlight the scope of opportunities a Biochemistry degree offers.  This ranged from lab-based applications to programme and business management and was extremely helpful in highlighting future prospects! Many speakers were also part of the Newcastle alumni, and were more than happy to answer any questions about life post-graduation.”

Josie, Biochemistry with Professional Placement Year

Biomedical Genetics

Biomedical Genetics BSc Honours - B901 (3 years)

Biomedical Genetics Integrated Masters - B903 (4 years)

Biomedical Genetics studies how DNA and inheritance patterns contribute to risk for common diseases, population diversity and evolution.

The degree focuses on human genetics and the human genome. You will study a range of model organisms in addition to humans. You will learn about gene regulation, mutations and diseases, development and evolution, and how cutting-edge technologies inform diagnostics and treatment of diseases such as cancer.

The four year Integrated Masters programme offers a choice of Masters modules and you will undertake an extensive final year research project in one of our world class research institutes.

You can also undertake a professional placement year or study overseas placement year whilst studying on either of these degree programmes.

Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical Sciences BSc Honours - B940 (3 years)

Biomedical Sciences (Integrated Masters) - B900 (4 years)

Biomedical Sciences is the study of how the human body is impacted by physiological and pathological disorder and disease, and how science combats this with medicine and therapy.

By studying the science behind modern medicine, biomedical researchers investigate a wide range of topics including metabolic disorders such as diabetes, childhood cancer and microorganism infections. During this degree, you learn to integrate the practical skills of research with the theoretical understanding of health and disease mechanisms.

The four year Integrated Masters programme offers a choice of Masters modules and you will undertake an extensive final year research project in one of our world class research institutes.

You can also undertake a professional placement year or study overseas placement year whilst studying on either of these degree programmes.

Our Malaysia Campus offers the BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences degree as a 2+1 programme.

Pharmacology

Pharmacology BSc Honours - B210 (3 years)

 - B211 (4 years)

Pharmacology is the design and study of drugs, how they exert their affect and how the body interacts with such substances.

We explore key topics including:

• why some drugs are given as an injection but others as a tablet
• how someone worked out the drug dosage on the side of the packet
• why some drugs are more toxic than others
• why any drugs are harmful if they are supposed to help treat patients

You can also undertake a professional placement year or study overseas placement year whilst studying on either of these degree programmes.

Physiological Sciences

Physiological Sciences BSc Honours - B100 (3 years)

- B122 (4 years)

Physiology is the study of human body systems and how they control and maintain function of the whole organism both in normal (healthy) and pathophysiological (disease) states.

The course will introduce you to the most recent and important advances in the field of physiology through our research active teaching staff. You will investigate how the human body functions in both health and disease from the level of the individual molecule up to the whole organism.

You can also undertake a professional placement year or study overseas placement year whilst studying on either of these degree programmes.

Watch the videos below to hear what two of our recent Physiological Sciences graduates have to say about the Physiological Sciences programme here at Newcastle.

Coming to Newcastle University was the best decision I have ever made. It provided me with a very strong supportive platform allowing me to grow, not only as a person but academically too, pushing me to my best capability.

Flexibility

The Biomedical and Biomolecular suite of programmes has a common first year.

This allows students to switch degree specialism at the end of their first year.

If you're not quite sure which is the right course for you, you can change after you have learned more about the different bioscience subjects.
