Wellbeing and Support Resources

Support for your students

Supervisors play an important role in supporting student wellbeing, both through direct support and by signposting students to appropriate University services and resources.

It is good practice to familiarise yourself with the wellbeing services available on campus for postgraduate research students, which you can find out about here and here. These cover a wide range of needs, including disability support, counselling, and access to helplines and telephone-based support. You can direct students to these pages as appropriate.

If you are concerned about a student, guidance is available on who to contact and what steps to take, depending on the situation, here.

There are also training opportunities available to equip supervisors to recognise and respond to issues such as student wellbeing concerns, stress, and mental health challenges. As part of the PGR Supervisor Development Programme, we offer PGR Student Wellbeing Workshop for Supervisors - available to book via here

A range of further training opportunities is available through the LMS, including MH & Wellbeing Awareness Training and Suicide Prevention Training, as well as various other workshops covering topics such as stress, sleep, and burnout.

Support for yourself

All colleagues can access the  Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which offers free, confidential 24/7 wellbeing support via Spectrum Life. The EAP also includes acces to a free wellbeing platform (code:nuwell), offering a range of digital tools such as self-guided meditation, self-help programmes and other proactive wellbeing resources.

Further information, guidance, and support for staff wellbeing can be found on the Colleague Health and Wellbeing Hub, which also includes a monthly newsletter featuring information on upcoming workshops, events, and awareness days. You can subscribe to the newsletter
here, or view past editions in the archive here.
