Research Quality

We have embraced the research mission consistently to place research at the heart of what we do, alongside teaching. This enables us to offer to our students leading edge research informed teaching and learning.

Higher Education Funding Councils Audit 2014

We are a research-intensive School, with the majority of our academic staff engaged in producing internationally recognised research and publications.

In the latest external research audit, conducted by the Higher Education Funding Councils in 2014, 21% of the publications submitted by the school for assessment were adjudged to be world leading (4*).

A further 49% of the Schools publications that were submitted for assessment were adjudged to be internationally excellent in terms of their originality, significance and rigour (3*).

We strongly believe in research-led teaching, and the quality of our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes is underlined by the fact that teachers on the majority of our modules are internationally recognised experts in their fields, who regularly publish in their subject areas and bring passion and insight to their teaching drawn from their involvement in cutting edge research of the highest quality.

Research Excellence Framework 2014

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 assessed the quality of research in the UK’s higher education institutions. The review process is managed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and is based on three main criteria:

  • quality of research outputs
  • impact of research (beyond the University)
  • vitality of the research environment

Our School submitted to Unit of Assessment 20 and the results are now published.

The previous analysis, the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 produced the following results for our Faculty.
