The School of Medicine is the hub of clinical and medical education research and scholarship activities within the University.

Our work supports evidence-based innovation in learning and teaching. It shapes the training and practice of the modern healthcare workforce.

Our Research Strategy is delivered in partnership with both the education research theme and Graduate School.

Our Vision

Educational research in the School of Medicine encompasses a range of areas across undergraduate and postgraduate learning contexts.

Developing a New Generation of Educational Researchers

We're passionate about developing education, training, and careers in research.

We offer high-quality research opportunities to undergraduate medical, healthcare, and medical sciences students. As well as those pursuing postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degrees.

We also host the NIHR Incubator for Clinical Education. This network supports the career development of talented clinicians with interests in educational research.

Research Ethics

All research studies must have appropriate ethical review. Details of University processes are described here: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/research/researchgovernance/ethics/

Research within the School of Medicine is subject to review by the Faculty of Medical Sciences Research Ethics Committee. Applications for ethical review should be submitted through the online form available here: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/research/researchgovernance/ethics/process/

Some studies may be subject to NHS review and registration. Details are available at https://www.ncl.ac.uk/research/researchgovernance/ethics/. If you are conducting research within a Trust of other NHS organisation, you should speak to your Research and Development department.

Research Management Group

Are you conducting research or evaluation involving School of Medicine staff and/or students as researchers and/or participants?

You must complete and submit a School of Medicine Research Management Group (RMG) Proposal Form prior to beginning data collection, and at least one week before the next RMG meeting.

Please Note:

  • Only proposals submitted via the online form will be considered by the School of Medicine RMG.
  • Projects that include NUMed staff and/or students as researchers and/or participants require NUMed approval before they can be considered by the School of Medicine RMG.
  • Full ethical approval and RMG approval are required before data collection from human participants can begin.
