Studying for a research degree by the distance mode of study
A MPhil or PhD by Distance is a distinct mode of study for a Newcastle University research degree where those studying undertake their research away from the University’s approved campus (either in the UK or internationally) with remote support supplied by Newcastle University.
MPhil by Distance and PhD by Distance are not separate awards or programmes.
The PhD and MPhil by Distance Regulations for 2026/27 are available here: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/regulations/.
These regulations should be read in conjunction with the:
- Doctor of Philosophy Degree Progress Regulations
- Doctor of Philosophy Degree Assessment Regulations
- Code of Practice for PGR students
Please note that the 26/27 academic year is a pilot year for this option and it is currently only available where applicants intend to study in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering and the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
The normal research degree processes and policies for research degrees apply to By Distance study but it will be the norm for most interactions to take place online e.g. induction, supervisory meetings, annual progress reviews and examination. Visits to campus are not required but short visits are encouraged if possible.
By Distance students will require access to an appropriate local research environment including regular and ongoing access to any facilities and resources essential for their research. The applicant must also be able to demonstrate that they are suitably prepared to undertake a research degree at a distance via their selected candidature (full-time or part-time).
The Academic Unit needs to ensure it can provide appropriate support to the By Distance student and while this will be different, it should be an equivalent level provision to that provided to an on-campus MPhil or PhD student.
There are specific considerations when deciding on an applicant’s and project’s suitability for studying on this mode including legal and ethical requirements. The By Distance pre-application checklist supports these discussions between applicant and prospective supervisor. It should be used to ensure appropriate arrangements in terms of supervision and support, research environment, research skills and transferable skills training, the fulfilment of progression milestones, and the examination process can be put in place.
The full policy is available here and the Pre-Application checklist which should be filled in by the Supervisor in conjunction with the applicant is available here. (PDF version available here - Pre-Approval Checklist for a PhD or MPhil by Distance.pdf - 283KB)
Following receipt of the completed pre-application checklist, approval will be sought from the relevant Faculty Dean of Postgraduate Research. If approved, the Doctoral College will advise the Academic Supervisor and the applicant to make a formal application via the PG Admissions Portal.
It is important to note that By Distance is not anticipated to be a suitable mode of study for all prospective applicants. The University reserves the right to not offer the By Distance mode of study if it deems the circumstances are unsuitable in any manner.
