I studied Applied Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons) at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen before undertaking a MSc in Exercise Physiology at Liverpool John Moores University. From there I completed my PhD at Loughborough University researching strategies to optimise carbohydrate supplementation for endurance exercise in temperate and warm environments.
I stayed at Loughborough University, I taking on a role as a Research Assistant in Sports Nutrition and Water Balance and before becoming a Research Associate in Exercise Nutrition on a project investigating the effects of collagen peptide supplementation on appetite and post-exercise energy intake in females. Following on from my time at Loughborough, I moved to Canada to work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Ottawa. Here I was involved in projects exploring the impact of heat and humidity on physiological and nutritional responses, particularly in older adults.
In 2025 I started my role as Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Nutrition here at Newcastle University.
My research interest include on fuelling athlete performance (specifically the role of carbohydrate), reducing gastrointestinal symptoms associated with exercise and female physiology. I am also interested in exploring further the interplay between the external environment and nutrition and whether nutritional strategies can help attenuate thermoregulatory responses in vulnerable populations, especially in the presence of global warming and climate change. My work involves performance testing and physiological measures including blood sampling, the use of stable isotope tracers and use of biochemistry techniques such as ELISAs.
