Wellbeing Support

We understand that transitioning to higher education and balancing responsibilities alongside studies can be challenging. It's important that you are supported during your studies to give you the best start to your career.

Access to the right support

The School's Student Wellbeing Advisor can signpost, advise and guide you. They can provide the best next steps to take if you experience difficulties that are impacting your wellbeing.

They can support you by:
  • being a confidential listening ear for you to talk to about factors impacting your wellbeing
  • advising you on your best next steps if you are struggling with a personal difficulty
  • recommending practical resources to help you improve and maintain your wellbeing
  • helping you understand and access support within our Student Wellbeing Services
They can offer guidance on:
  • accessing assessments for specific learning difficulties
  • how to obtain medical evidence and claim reimbursement for the cost
  • how to arrange a Student Support Plan (SSP) with our Disability Team
They can offer support via:
  • 1-1 confidential appointments
  • regular drop-ins and events
  • email support
  • a referral from your personal tutor/programme leader/school
  • wellbeing activities
We'll keep you updated regularly

The School’s Student Wellbeing Advisor sends regular wellbeing messages via the School's wellbeing Canvas site. You will get access to this site when you register with us as a student.

These wellbeing updates will give you important information on:

  • the services available
  • events running across the University
  • special events in the city

This means you'll know where to go and the support available if you need it.

If you're a current student, take a look at our canvas site: SoE Student Wellbeing

Thanks for the support, just our chat today has put me in a bit of a better place. It's nice having someone that can listen and help me in my position.

Staying safe at the University

Newcastle is known for being a friendly and safe city. However, we know that coming to a new city or getting used to new surroundings and spaces can seem daunting. Your safety is paramount to us. We want you to feel safe and supported in and around our buildings during your studies.

We've put a range of safety measures in place to help you adjust to life at the University.

Safezone app

We're supported by SafeZone, a free app available to our students and colleagues. If you need help while you're on campus or in university managed accommodation, it'll connect you directly to our security team.

SafeZone only shares your location when you ask for help or check in on campus. Its privacy feature means it doesn’t track you at other times.

University security team

Our security team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies on campus.

This includes support if you're worried about your own physical or mental health or that of a fellow student.

You can call security on 0191 208 6817.

Campus police officer

We have our own campus police officer for Newcastle University. You can contact him directly on:

Email: gary.white@northumbria.police.uk

Phone: 0191 208 6817

You can also contact 999 for emergencies or the Northumbria Police switchboard 101 for non-emergencies.

We also hold student drop-in sessions with a police officer during term time. This gives you an opportunity to speak in a safe environment and ask questions or share any concerns. The police officer can also offer practical advice and guidance on crime prevention and personal safety.

Where:
Student's Union - Level 0 in the Student Advice Centre
Mondays during term time - 12:00 to 14:00

Safe taxi

During term time, if you are stranded with no money to get home but have your student ID card with you, you can use our Safe Taxi scheme.

It is available at any time of the day or night and it covers the cost of up to an £8 fare.
