About Ichamati

I'm a political geographer from Kolkata, India, currently undertaking my PhD funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, UKRI (with the Northern Ireland and North East Doctoral Training Partnership).

My research spans across political geography, critical geopolitics, and critical military studies. Regionally, I focus on South Asia, particularly India. Some of my previous research includes,

  • A Critical Geopolitics of Militarisation in India
  • Campus as a political space: students, space, and politics in Newcastle University

Project description

My project aims to explore the interrelationships between universities in India and the political movement of Hindu Nationalism.

It uses ethnographic research to identify and analyse the multiple political geographies of Hindu Nationalism in and through the university campus.

It seeks to answer the following questions:

  1. What role do universities play in the unfolding of the Hindutva political agenda?
  2. What are the relations between Hindu Nationalism and university campuses?
  3. How is Hindu Nationalism resisted within the University campus?

My research is situated within feminist and postcolonial political geographies and uses feminist and decolonial research methods.

I am broadly interested in issues related to right-wing politics, ethno-nationalism, politics of the state, everyday politics, violence, and militarisation. Parallelly, my research focuses on the politics of the university and higher education.

Personal interests

Beyond academia, I am interested in matters of student and youth politics, as well as movements committed to decolonisation, demilitarisation, and social justice.
