ECR Seedcorn Fund: Outreach

Awarded September 2021

We are delighted to announce the award of two ECR Outreach Proposals. The Outreach Fund aims to support ECRs to develop new outreach and public engagement projects within the remit of the hub and to advance ECR career development. The Outreach Fund supports proposals that:

  • Raise public awareness of energy networks challenges among people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Engage groups currently underrepresented in energy networks research and broader careers with a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Inspire creative public engagement with ECRs.
  • Demonstrate a strategic alignment with the ECR’s development within the Energy Networks field.

Energy, Environment, Education and Employment; the Role of Renewable Energy Research for the Local Communities

Principle Investigator: Shivangi Sharma, Birmingham University

The proposed project will engage with secondary school students and community members in East Birmingham to raise awareness of i) renewable (solar PV) energy and thermal energy storage (TES) systems, ii) their potential role in developing resilient local energy networks iii) R&D into TES being carried out at the University’s Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre at Tyseley Energy Park, and iv) research and engineering careers in TES and energy networks.

Silicon Carbide Capability Build-up in Energy Networks Outreach

Principle Investigator: Iain Laird, Bristol University

The outreach project, aims to showcase the opportunities presented by silicon carbide (SiC) based power electronics to industry and encourage students to take up research in this field.
