Introduction
I have been an academic at Newcastle University for 28 years, leading on education, research and patient care in the field of conscious sedation for dental care.
Background
As an academic consultant in sedation dentistry, I have developed world-class research and teaching programmes in sedation and anxiety management.
Roles and Responsibilities
Degree Programme Director for the Postgraduate Certificate in Sedation in Dentistry and Course Lead for BDS Sedation & Anaesthesia.
Lead Consultant in Dental Sedation, Chair Sedation Advisory Committee, and Medical Appraiser, Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Faculty Sedation Advisor and Fellowship Assessor, Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Qualifications.
PhD, BDS, BSc, FDSRCS, FFDRCS, FRSB, CIBiol, CSciTeach
Previous Positions
Lecturer Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Guys & St. Thomas' Hospitals NHS Trust, London.
Honours and Awards
Personal Chair, Newcastle University
Hunterian Professorship, Royal College of Surgeons of England
Journal of Disability & Oral Health Prize
Shirley Glasstone Hughes Prize, British Dental Association
Research Interests
My research has focused on the field of anxiety management and conscious sedation in dentistry, investigating new methods of sedation and providing alternatives to general anaesthesia for paediatric dental patients. Programmes have included evaluating pre-operative dental anxiety, cognitive effects of sedation agents, investigation of new paediatric sedation techniques, complications and morbidity of sedation, seeking alternative sedation techniques to avoid dental general anaesthesia, and clinical trials of new anxiolytic agents.
Postgraduate Supervision
I have supervised numerous doctoral and masters students undertaking projects in paediatric sedation, intravenous sedation and pre-operative anxiety. One of my students was the first dental recipient of a National NHS R&D Training Fellowship.
Funding
Funding for projects in which I have been involved has totalled over £500,000, mainly from NHS R&D and the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Postgraduate: As Degree Programme Director for the Postgraduate Certificate in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry, and former Postgraduate Diploma, I developed innovative PGT sedation programmes, externally endorsed as "gold standard in the UK".
Undergraduate: I established and led the undergraduate BDS programme in dental sedation in Newcastle School of Dental Sciences.
