About Philosophy

Philosophy at Newcastle University is a significant centre for modern European thought. We offer degrees that primarily focus on continental philosophy.

Our students and our staff examine the European philosophical tradition together. We debate key philosophical problems and ask what philosophers can contribute to the world beyond the academic. We provide expertise in the history of philosophy and we create spaces for philosophical discovery.

Research interests

Our teaching is informed by various research interests including:

  • twentieth & twenty-first-century European philosophy
  • history of philosophy
  • Kantian and post-Kantian philosophy
  • phenomenology
  • philosophy of art (especially music)
  • social and political philosophy, including Hegel, Marx, biopolitics

We also cover hermeneutics, feminism and philosophy of nature.

Good practice guidelines

The unit is committed to following the British Philosophical Association (BPA) and Society for Women in Philosophy (SWIP) good practice guidelines.

The guidelines deal with:

  • gender bias
  • conferences and seminars
  • sexual harassment
  • care givers
  • staff-student relationship

Study with us

We run BA, MLitt, and PhD degree programmes in philosophy.

A unique aspect of the BA in Philosophy is the students undertake.

Philosophy should ideally be understood as a conversation with ideas that inform the student's and teacher's responsibility for their own learning and development.

Professor David Edward Rose, Professor of Philosophy
