  • managerial
  • regulatory
  • resource allocation

purposes. This subject allows you to gain exemption from the foundation level professional accounting examinations.

Your study will be informed by perspectives from the social sciences, including:

  • behavioural
  • economic
  • political
  • sociological

We also have an Accounting and Finance Society that runs social and networking events.

Economics

Economics is the study of the factors that influence income, wealth and wellbeing.

It seeks to inform the design and implementation of economic policy.

You'll gain an understanding of how resources are used and how households and firms behave and interact.

This understanding is required at both the individual (micro) and the aggregate (macro) level.

Economics aim is to analyse and understand the allocation, distribution and utilisation of scarce resources and their consequences for economic and social wellbeing.

A key discipline in the social sciences, it also engages with:

  • psychology
  • politics
  • sociology and anthropology
  • geography
  • history
  • law

Using mathematics and statistics, accounting is engaging increasingly with sciences such as biology, environmental science and medicine.

Understanding economics is essential for an understanding of business behaviour, strategy and corporate performance.

It's one of the central subjects underpinning the study of business and management and related areas.

There's lots of social activity with this subject, including an active Economics Society and Entrepreneurship Society, with events and trips abroad.

Marketing and Management

You'll gain a broad understanding of business concepts and contemporary marketing theory and practice with Marketing and Management.

The subject has a strong vocational orientation. You'll get the opportunity to apply theory to practice with:

  • case studies
  • practical projects
  • optional work placement

It's supported by modules in core management theory that aid your understanding of the role of marketing in business and organisations.

You can get involved with others studying this subject with the Business Society

Pre-requisites

To study business in your Combined Honours degree, a grade 6 or B in Mathematics and English at GCSE (or equivalent) is normally required if not taken at A or AS Level.

Modules

Find out about our typical modules. Modules are subject to change and could differ on an annual basis.

The Integrated Business Stream offers five separate streams in various business and management disciplines:

Accounting and Finance (ACC)

These modules will provide the necessary background to understanding corporate accounts.  This will assist in such management functions as decision-making and resource allocation.

Economics (ECO/ACE)

Economics is the study of the factors that influence income, wealth and well-being.  Having gained an understanding of the basics, students can go onto studying economics in both a business and global context.

Marketing (MKT/ACE)

After an introductory module, this stream studies marketing from a variety of perspectives and within various business sectors, as well as considering marketing within the overall business environment.

Management (BUS)

Management is concerned with how businesses operate, considering not only the use of resources but other topics such as human resource management and decision-making.  This stream also provides an opportunity to learn about small business start-up and innovation.

International Business Management (BUS)

This stream takes a business environmental view of globalisation and provides an opportunity to understand the effects of global trade on people and organisations.
