Anatomy is the foundation of medicine, and at NUMed, we take it very seriously… with an exciting twist, of course! This year, we marked World Anatomy Day with a fun-filled event on 26 October at AEON Mall Bukit Indah, in conjunction with the global celebration on 15 October. (Fun fact: this date commemorates the passing of Andreas Vesalius, the founder of modern human anatomy!)
Organised by our ever-enthusiastic Anatomy Working Group, with Dr Prakash Manickam Kumarasamy as Chairperson, this year’s event attracted around 300 visitors. From creative art to interactive learning, there was something for everyone. The day was full of fun, facts, and fabulous activities, including:
- Anatomy Sculpture & Innovation
- Anatomy Catwalk (complete with amazing body painting!)
- Anatomy Manicure
- Anatomy Henna
- Zumba Sessions
- Interactive Games
- Lucky Draws
We also had two booths: one on cancer awareness that was manned by our fabulous Foundation students and another from AEON Anytime Fitness, both sharing important info and sparking conversations. Meanwhile, to sweeten our celebration, Dr Prakash wowed everyone with a legendary thorax anatomy cake while adorable anatomy cupcakes added to the fun.
A mesmerising Zumba performance by our students and staff, and professional Zumba dancers added an exciting energy to the celebration. Crowd favourites like the Anatomy Catwalk and educational booths made a strong comeback, but new additions like the Anatomy Manicure, Henna and Kolam stations definitely stole the show this year, blending culture, creativity, and science in the most colourful way.
“The manicure was the first of its kind in Malaysia, and it was incredible to see how anatomy can be taught through ‘unconventional’ platforms like manicures and even body painting! It was amazing to witness students drawing and colouring to highlight the beauty of the body. This innovative approach not only engaged students but also gave them a fresh, creative perspective on learning anatomy,” said Dr Prakash.
This event was truly a campus-wide effort with students from all programmes of study coming together to make it a success. Special shoutout to our kolam designers, who spent five hours perfecting their intricate masterpieces after a full day of classes! Talk about dedication.
And, of course, a big thank you to our generous sponsors for their support in keeping the energy high (and the prizes exciting!). Besides providing the venue for free, AEON Mall Bukit Indah also distributed goodie bags filled with multiple merchandise vouchers. AEON Anytime Fitness joined in the fun with goodie bags, free two-month memberships, and VIP trial tickets. Other sponsors that contributed amazing prizes include Legoland, Elseiver, 488 Food Bank Johor, Jom Cha, Kavita Sharlene, Royal Enfield, the Newcastle Anatomy Grant, and other anonymous supporters.
