Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia is entering an exciting new phase in research development.
From its origins in 19th century, Newcastle University has developed a strong and vibrant interdisciplinary research base in medicine and the physical sciences. Our research was ranked 8th in England for combined Medical Units of Assessment in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.
Projects are being developed at NUMed using a hub and spoke model with Newcastle University UK. Expert researchers can work in partnership to deliver high quality studies that will benefit the educational needs of our students at NUMed and health care needs of patients in South East Asia.
The research programme at NUMed feeds off Newcastle’s established excellence in translational and education research. It is congruent with Newcastle’s research mission.
Impact of our research
Newcastle University has made a number of ground breaking discoveries leading to the development of new treatments in the areas of:
- Cell and Molecular Biosciences
- Cellular Medicine
- Health and Society
- Genetic Medicine
- Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine
NUMed aims to deliver similar ground breaking discoveries to improve the health care of people in Malaysia and South East Asia.
Clinical and translational research
Initial clinical/translational projects at NUMed will be focussed on epidemiology of non communicable disease and biomarkers for common cancers in Malaysia such as breast and oral cancer. Projects will have a strong basic science component that will translate directly to the benefit of patients.
NUMed is keen to develop collaborative partnerships with other researchers in Malaysia. This will broaden the scope of projects we undertake and allow Newcastle to contribute to improving health care within Malaysia and to South East Asia.
Medical education research will focus on developing our MB BS and Biomedical Science curriculae to ensure they remain tailored to the educational needs of students studying at NUMed. This will allow us to continue to provide research informed teaching and an evidence based approach to our methods of curriculum delivery.
Research Governance at Newcastle encompasses a range of policies, tools and processes that assist Researchers to ensure their work continues to be of the highest quality.
