Teaching Roles in Primary Care
- Year 3 (Integrated Core Clinical Placement – Primary Care): Introduce students to the foundations of primary care, enabling them to translate pre-clinical knowledge into early clinical practice through supervised patient interactions and exposure to common conditions seen in the community.
- Year 5 (Assistantship in General Practice): Prepare final-year students for transition to practice by deepening their clinical reasoning, consultation skills, and understanding of continuity of care in general practice.
Key Aspects of the Role
- Educating Future Primary Care Physicians: Deliver a curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge with direct patient care, enabling students to learn through supervised consultations, case discussions, and real-time clinical decision-making. This apprenticeship model equips them to manage undifferentiated presentations and address comprehensive healthcare needs across all life stages.
- Broad Clinical and Interdisciplinary Competence: Guide students to develop a wide-ranging understanding across medical disciplines, fostering adaptability in managing multimorbidity, preventive health, and continuity of care; hallmarks of family medicine practice.
- Resource and Systems Management in Primary Care: Train students to optimize limited resources and prioritize care in community clinics. Emphasize practical skills in coordinating multidisciplinary teams and innovating solutions to meet healthcare challenges in rural and underserved settings.
- Mentorship and Professional Development: Provide close bedside and clinic‑based mentorship, fostering resilience, empathy, and a patient-centred mindset. Encourage reflective practice and professional growth through real patient interactions and longitudinal follow-up.
- Research and Quality Improvement: Engage students in practice‑based research and audit projects to strengthen evidence-informed care and promote continuous quality improvement in primary care services.
- Leadership in Community Health: Equip students with practical leadership skills for primary care, including health service management, population health strategies, and alignment with Ministry of Health priorities.
Research focuses on primary care and health equity, exploring both micro and macroeconomic drivers that influence access to quality care. A key area of interest is the development of cost‑effective models, such as shared devices for self‑monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) and other chronic disease management tools, to reduce financial barriers and optimize resource utilization in low‑income and underserved communities. By addressing socio‑economic gaps through innovative and sustainable solutions, to ensure equitable healthcare delivery and improve outcomes, while also examining emerging challenges such as e‑cigarette use and its impact on public health.
