Course overview

The programme leads to the award of a BSc (Honours) Data Science degree from Newcastle University, UK, ensuring graduates are recognised by a globally respected UK university.

All three academic years are delivered at NUMed Malaysia campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. The programme follows the academic standards and quality assurance framework of Newcastle University, ensuring consistent academic quality and assessment standards across the full course of study. It is also accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and mapped to MQF Level 6, so the qualification is recognised under both UK and Malaysian frameworks.

Programme structure

The programme runs over three stages, all taught at NUMed Malaysia.

Stage 1 establishes the foundations of the discipline, building core skills in programming, mathematics and statistics, and the principles of working with data.

Stage 2 develops applied competence, extending into machine learning, data engineering, and the research methods that underpin sound analytical work.

Stage 3 moves into advanced and specialist study and culminates in an applied research project carried out under the supervision of academic staff.

Entry requirements

Students who have completed SPM, O-Level or an equivalent programme must first complete a recognised pre-university qualification as a basic requirement for entry to an undergraduate degree at NUMed Malaysia.

Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications for direct entry to the BSc (Honours) Data Science:

Newcastle's Foundation Programme

CGPA 3.00 including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

A-Level

Minimum B, B, C including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Minimum B, B, C including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM)

Minimum B, B, C including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

Unified Examination Certificate (UEC)

A score of 4 based on the average of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Mathematics I and Advanced Mathematics II, with none of these subjects achieving less than B4.

(A1 = 1; A2 =2; B3 = 3; B4 = 4; B5 = 5; B6= 6; C7 = 7; C8= 8)

Malaysian Matriculation / Foundation in Science

CGPA 3.30 including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

Australian Certificate Year 12 / Monash University Foundation Year

Australian Matriculation or Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) with an average of 70%, including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject. Other Australian qualifications are also accepted, including University of New South Wales (UNSW) Foundation, Western Australia Curriculum Council, Higher School Certificate (HSC) Sydney, Trinity College Foundation Studies, Australian University Foundation Programme, South Australia Matriculation (SAM) and Victoria Certificate of Education Year 12.

National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 / New Zealand Bursary

Minimum of 80 credits, including two Level 3 subjects endorsed with Merit and one Level 3 subject endorsed with Achieved, equivalent to BBC at A-Level. Subjects must include B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

CPU, CIMP, Ontario Grade 12

70% based on the average of the six best Grade 12 subjects, including Mathematics (above 70%) and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

Sri Lanka A-Level

Minimum B, B, C including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

All India Senior School Certificate, Indian School Certificate

70% based on the average of the five best academic subjects, including B in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject.

American Advanced Placement (AP)

4, 4, 3 points, with 4 points in Mathematics and one subject from Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Computing, Further Mathematics or Psychology, and one other subject. These subjects must be taken at Grade 12 level or above.

Graduate Entry

Applications from candidates with a relevant background will be considered. Applicants must have achieved, or expect to achieve, at least an upper second-class honours STEM degree or equivalent.

You must be at least 17 years old at the time of enrolment or shortly thereafter.

Fees and funding

A single inclusive fee is charged to cover the costs of tuition, library, laboratory and computing facilities, examination, administration fees and all other academic-related charges. There are no hidden extra costs.

Because the Data Science degree is delivered wholly in Malaysia across all three years, the fee structure differs from the joint 2+1 programmes, and the comparison with the cost of three years in the UK used on those pages does not apply here.

Sales and Service Tax (SST)

The following education-related charges are subject to SST:

  • tuition fees
  • registration fees
  • admission charges
  • co-curricular charges
  • books and study materials charges;
  • teaching aids/facilities charges; or
  • any other charges or fees relating to education imposed by the institution.

For NUMed students, this tax will come into effect starting 1 September 2025.

Malaysian students are not subject to this tax.
