Classics short story podcast

"Just like an honest wool-working woman" by Dr Susanna Phillippo has been brought to life in a new podcast. The short story was highly commended by The Classical Association's Creative Writing competition 2022.

The Classical Association's Creative Writing competition

The Classical Association asked entrants to submit stories inspired by Stephen Fry's ‘Mythos’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Troy' trilogy.

These stories took place in a variety of settings:

  • from ancient athletic festivals to dystopian quarantine prisons and a twentieth-century Cornish mineshaft
  • from the Roman forum to a celebrity mansion via trenches, treehouses and temples
  • from the peaks of Mount Olympus to a sofa in the Underworld

What is "Just like an honest wool-working woman" about?

Dr Philippo, who is a Senior Lecturer in Classics at our school, submitted a story inspired by a line in Book 12 of Homer's Iliad. Her story was about grief and storytelling. It was commended in the Open Category of the Classical Association's competition.

This story has now been vividly brought to life in a narration by Professor James Robson. Access the podcast to listen to this fascinating tale. You can also listen to the other stories recognised in this year's competition.
