Staff Profile

Dr Ivan Matijasic

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Background

I grew up in Croatia and later moved to Italy to attend Ca' Foscari University of Venice (BA and MA in Ancient History and Classics). I obtained a PhD in Classics in July 2015 at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. During my PhD I spent an academic year (2012/2013) at the Seminar für Alte Geschichte of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau. In 2015/2016 I went back to Ca' Foscari where I secured a research position and then moved to Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster as a Research Fellow of the Gerda Henkel Foundation (2016/2017). Between April and May 2017 I was Visiting Fellow at the Friedrich-Meineke-Institut of the Freie Universität Berlin.

In my research I focus primarily on ancient Greek historiography and geography, late-antique studies, Greek epigraphy and Digital Humanities.

Research

RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • Ancient Greek historiography, including both reception of Classical and Hellenistic Greek historians in antiquity and the study of fragmentary authors such as Hecataeus of Miletus, Hellanicus of Lesbos, etc.
  • Ancient geographical texts and their significance for the history of ancient geography
  • Late antiquity, especially the fifth and sixth century
  • Greek epigraphy, mainly inscriptions that define borders and territories
  • Digital Humanities (I am involved in different digital projects at Ca' Foscari University)

CURRENT RESEARCH

My current project focuses on the renewed interest for ancient Greek geographical texts, their transcription, preservation, and the study of their content in the age of the emperor Justinian I (527-565), as well as on the significance of ancient geography to sixth-century literary and legal production
