Scientist takes her research to parliament!

23 March 2022

Dr Hannah Kreczak, from the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics, attended Parliament to present her mathematics research to a range of politicians and a panel of expert judges, as part of STEM for BRITAIN on Monday 7 March.

Hannah's poster on research about "the fate of microplastics in the ocean which sink due to the growth of algae on their surface", will be judged against dozens of other scientists' research in the only national competition of its kind.

Hannah,an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow, was shortlisted from hundreds of applicants to appear in Parliament.

On presenting her research in Parliament, she said:

"I'm delighted at this opportunity to discuss my research with MPs. It may not be obvious how mathematical modelling can help in areas such as marine pollution, so as well as the predictions within my work, I'm hoping to share my enthusiasm for applied mathematics. Addressing the impact of plastic pollution requires a global effort, dependent on our lawmakers, so by highlighting this issue with MPs I'm hoping it inspires them to strive for policies which lead to a future which embraces sustainable oceans."
