About Alex

Why did you choose to study your degree at Newcastle University?

Newcastle for me was a fantastic combination of everything that I wanted from my university experience: a strong academic department, a dynamic and vibrant city full of things to do, and plenty of opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities. It came down to being a great overall balance. I liked the Maths Department and the modules offered, but the entry requirements weren't ridiculously high. The city seemed great to live in and felt like it was just the right size. The clubs and societies here also felt like a good fit for me. Pretty much all the factors I was taking into consideration came together perfectly at Newcastle.

What was the support from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics like when you first started?

The Transition Officer was fantastic, and definitely the best support offered! Weekly updates helped us stay on track, and figure out how university works as opposed to school. My Personal Tutor was also absolutely brilliant, talking me through different concerns I had about my degree, and helping with my general welfare.

Are you enjoying your degree? Can you tell us about some of your highlights to date?

I'm really enjoying the degree so far! It's difficult to name one particular highlight, but the overall experience has been the best in my life. I have learned more amazing mathematics than ever before, while simultaneously training and competing in karate, something which quickly became my main occupation outside of university hours. I've made lots of amazing new friends, met people from all over the country and the world, and got to travel and see the UK, all while studying my degree! How fantastic is that?

What has your favourite module been so far?

In first year, I absolutely loved Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations! Paul Bushby is such a fantastic lecturer, with seamlessly organised notes and perfect delivery of the content. He took the already interesting subject to a whole new level. This year, I’ve really enjoyed Scientific Computation with Python. Chris Graham not only packed it full of useful and practical skills but made it extremely entertaining as well.

Are you a member of any societies? If so, could you tell us how you got involved in them and what you enjoy about them?

Currently, I'm the President of the Newcastle University Karate Club. I got involved last year when I came along to try one of the sessions, and training quickly became my new passion. I was doing really well, and have even medalled several times at competitions since! We also formed an amazing community within the club, joined the committee together, and are now running the club. Definitely one of the best things that happened to me in Newcastle so far.

What is your favourite thing about Newcastle as a city?

My favourite thing has to be the size. It's big enough to where you can do pretty much anything you would want to do, but the whole city is still walkable. There are many nice neighbourhoods just outside the city centre with their own unique vibe, like Jesmond or Sandyford, but even the city centre has plenty to keep you entertained. Newcastle is a very beautiful, dynamic, and perfectly sized city.

What advice would you give to international students considering studying your degree at Newcastle University?

Most international students will be seeing their future universities, places where they are going to live full time for many years, primarily through the internet. Having visited a number of major cities in the UK, some of which I had applied to study in, I can tell you with confidence that Newcastle is the only one which not only looks good online, but even better in person! If you like what you're seeing online, come to Newcastle and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
