About Ankit

Why did you choose to study your degree at Newcastle University?

Whilst doing my research about all the different universities I wanted to go to, I came across Newcastle University and instantly knew that this would be the right place for me. Not only is it known for its Mathematics and Statistics department, but also because Newcastle is known to be an amazing city.

What was the support from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics like when you first started?

The transition from A-Level to University was made quite easy because of the Transition Officer, who helped me a lot along the way as I settled into a new city and started a different stage of my life. My Personal Tutor also helped me by making sure I was doing well physically and mentally through regular check-ins.

Are you enjoying your degree? Can you tell us about some of your highlights to date?

Currently I am doing Mathematics and Economics and I am enjoying my degree a lot as I get to have a deeper understanding about one of my favourite subjects. A part of me really looks forwards to assignments that we do every other week as it allows me to apply what I've learnt in lectures.

What has your favourite module been so far?

My favourite module as a first year student has to be ‘Introduction to Calculus’. So far this is because the more I learn about it the more interesting it gets. I like to learn about it and also apply it to real life scenarios. Additionally, I like the methods in which the lecturer of this module teaches.

What is the student community like within your subject?

The student community within a particular subject area can be very supportive, as we share common interests and goals. Within a subject area, we are given opportunities to collaborate on coursework and other projects which shows how open-minded the community is. This was made very apparent since the first week of university as we started the semester with teamwork activities.

Are you a member of any societies? If so, could you tell us how you got involved in them and what you enjoy about them?

I am currently a part of the Maths Society and the Hindu and Sikh society. I got involved with them through the Newcastle Student Union website. I really enjoy them because it gets groups of people with similar interests together. Additionally, the societies host loads of fun activities to do outside of university, which helps balance the work to leisure time as at time it can get overwhelming

What is your favourite thing about Newcastle as a city?

One of my favourite things about Newcastle, as a city, is that how everything is so close by. I personally go for walks around the city every Sunday as a way to relax as most of the places around is in walking distance. In addition, Newcastle also has a great night life which is another great thing about the city.

What advice would you give to international students considering studying your degree at Newcastle University?

I would highly recommend for international students to at least consider studying at Newcastle University, as personally I think it is a great place. Moving to a different country at the start can be very overwhelming, but I feel like the transition to moving into Newcastle is very easy, especially with the support that is offered therefore by the university itself.
