Experience A Vibrant Student Life With Global Opportunities At NUMed

With medical studies being one of the most intense educational routes, a proper environment encourages and supports students’ growth.

A holistic tertiary education experience entails not just world-class academics but also a vibrant campus community that allows the student to garner knowledge and grow academically and personally. With medical studies, which is one of the most intense educational routes, it becomes even more important for students to be provided with a proper environment that encourages and supports their growth. Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), a wholly owned international campus of Newcastle University, UK, is committed to offering both aspects to its students.

World-class Education

For one, the programmes offered at NUMed are internationally recognised. These include its Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences; Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS); and 2+1 BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (BMS).

All three programmes mirror those offered at the parent campus. Additionally, MBBS students have the option of studying in the UK for part of their studies, while BMS students will spend their third academic year there. Furthermore, the scrolls awarded to NUMed graduates are the same as those obtained by their UK counterparts and are widely recognised in the world.

Besides that, students stand to gain from the university's international collaborations and outlook. At NUMed, they are able to obtain a truly global perspective as they work with leading researchers around the world on a wide range of research projects. This also allows them to forge a solid professional network right from the start.

Thriving Student Community

NUMed is dedicated to cultivating a conducive environment to enable its students to have a balanced life whilst learning vital lifelong skills. As the well-being of students is of utmost importance, the university has a Student Support Team, which provides welfare support for students who may be experiencing personal or academic-related issues.

According to Dr. Vivian Verbo, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at the university, NUMed believes that greatness is achieved with support, inspiration, and empowerment.

“Medical school, like other university courses and life in general, is challenging. With the passage of time, the challenge will get increasingly tough. However, help is available, and students must seek it when necessary,” Dr. Vivian said.

Among others, the university has strong mentor-mentee and tutoring programmes to help students gain confidence and get back on track with their academics when needed.

"We also have a Student Support Plan (SSP) to assist students with chronic or long-term issues, so that the proper arrangements can be made for various occasions, such as the provision of extension or break times during assessments or final exams," shared Dr. Madihah Rushaidhi, Associate Professor and Dean of Biomedical Sciences at NUMed.

In ensuring that NUMed's students are able to experience a good study-life balance, the university also offers a wide range of activities, including sports clubs, cultural clubs, medical-related societies, and more. This is to encourage them to explore their interests beyond academics and hone valuable life skills such as communication, creativity, critical thinking, and leadership skills with spaces for reflective thinking and recreation.

Location is another great thing about NUMed. As it is strategically placed within the proximity of the thriving city of Johor Bahru, students are able to easily access leisurely pursuits outside the campus. These include numerous F&B and shopping opportunities. Positioned at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula, the campus also offers easy access to Singapore.

Get the best of both worlds as you head down a seamless path towards a rewarding career in health sciences. NUMed is now accepting applications for the 2023 intake of its Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences; Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS); and 2+1 BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences (BMS) programmes.
