Medical students can expect to receive a broad education, which will serve as the foundation for further career specialisation. Furthermore, they will be exposed to pre-clinical and clinical medicine, allowing them to actively learn and gain hands-on experience about various aspects of the human body as well as disease diagnosis and treatment.

It may seem to be a tough journey, but a good medical school will help its students to embrace these challenges and develop their knowledge and abilities as they proceed toward becoming actual medical professionals. Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) is well-equipped to pave a smoother pathway for those who want to pursue a profession in medicine.

For one, NUMed’s five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme is equivalent to that being offered at its parent campus in Newcastle University, UK. This highly acclaimed programme is recognised by both the General Medical Council, UK, and Malaysian Medical Council. While the programme is delivered in Malaysia for the entire five years, students will also have the option to study for up to eight weeks at Newcastle University, UK, during their fourth year, or for an extra year in the UK for an intercalated research qualification at either Bachelors or Masters level.

According to NUMed's CEO and Provost, Prof. Chris Baldwin, the university seeks to provide globally acclaimed medical education programmes that are responsive to the changing demands of both the Malaysian and global healthcare systems in order to recruit and retain top-notch future doctors.

"Medical education providers need to recognise the increasing international mobility of medical professionals, for it allows wider employment options, opportunities for professional development, and exposure to different health systems," added Prof. Baldwin when explaining about NUMed's advocacy for medical education's social accountability and local healthcare prioritisation.

In upholding NUMed’s commitment to delivering high-quality medical education, the university’s academics play an essential role in shaping doctors of the future and preparing them for the field of medicine. They are highly trained and experienced, with a number of them seconded from the UK campus.

Ms. Premila Nair, COO of NUMed, emphasised that the university aims to create a pool of high-calibre faculty and staff, and empower them to produce excellent graduates who are well-prepared for the global health economy of the 21st century.

"Students will benefit from being taught and guided by a highly professional and qualified international faculty as Newcastle University is home to a world-leading collaboration of research scientists, medical practitioners, and teaching professionals," Ms. Nair added.

The university incorporates innovative teaching methods, such as student-centred learning, which fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter, as well as opportunities for students to improve their critical thinking, creativity, and confidence in order to graduate as well-rounded healthcare professionals. Patient-centred integrated case-led education is also prioritised, allowing students to learn how to treat patients holistically.

The practice of global health begins wherever one puts their feet. NUMed aspires to provide an engaging environment that will inspire students to become exceptional medical professionals with astonishing skills and abilities.
