All work and no play, especially when one is pursuing a demanding programme of study like medicine or other health science-related courses, can be tough on one’s mental health. With a challenging academic load encompassing endless classes, lectures, tutorials, seminars, labs, and clinical placements, the student might find university life to be isolating and overwhelming.

One way to have a more balanced experience at university is to participate in the clubs and societies on offer there. In addition to being wonderful avenues for you to make friends with people who share similar interests, they also provide opportunities for you to take a break from the rigours of your academic demands while honing important soft skills.

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) is an international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, offering highly acclaimed programmes taught by skilled academics from all over the world. These include its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), BSc Biomedical Sciences and Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Besides providing a world-class education in the field of health sciences, the university also strives to prioritise  the mental, social, and physical wellbeing of its students. Hence, NUMed houses a wide range of clubs and societies from which students can choose based on their own interests.

As NUMed welcomes students with diverse cultural backgrounds from all over the world, enrolling into a society or club could be an excellent opportunity for students to click with new peers who share the same interests. On top of that, being a part of clubs and societies enhances your experience as a student. You will also be able to get insights into different cultures, beliefs and views, while picking up a new skill or hobby. Often, this can even be an opportunity to network and build friendships and connections that might last a lifetime.

For those seeking a more active lifestyle, NUMed offers a variety of sports clubs such as Volleyball Club, FLEB Frisbee, NUMed Basketball Association, and NUMed Dance Club. Belief and culture-based societies include the NUMed International Society (NISOC), Islamic Society (ISOC), Christian Fellowship, NUMed Buddhist Society, Chinese Society, and The NUMed Indian Society. There are also medical-related societies, Debate Society, a music club and more.

Through these clubs and societies,  students will get a leg-up in recognising their strengths and weaknesses alongside experiencing personal development in a diverse group. They will be able to identify their areas of knowledge, passion, and skills. Besides fostering friendship and fun, the clubs and society will open doors to new experiences that can be listed on students’ resumes when they graduate.
