A Commendable Performance at MIVG 2023

At this year's Medics Intervarsity Games (MIVG 2023), NUMed students exhibited their athletic prowess, winning numerous medals.

Students at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) displayed their athletic prowess at this year’s Medics Intervarsity Games (MIVG 2023), bagging numerous medals for their efforts. The contingent’s medal tally included a Gold in Women’s Futsal, and Silver in Women’s Basketball, Women’s 200m and Women’s 1500m. 

“All NUMed athletes did exceptionally well in MIVG 2023, showing great sportsmanship and teamwork even though this is the first intervarsity competition for many of them. I’m very excited for the future of sports at NUMed,” said the university’s Contingent Leader, Lan Yuen Qi, who is a Year 3 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student. 

Representing the Women’s Futsal team, which won the university’s only Gold medal, Lee Yong Jia, Eealyn, a Year 4 MBBS student, attributed their success to the diligence and team spirit demonstrated by all the members of the team, which also included other Year 4 MBBS students Fatin Sofea, Sumaya Elashmawy and Lavinashree Kumaran; Year 2 MBBS student Pooja Chandran; Year 2 Biomedical Science student Aya Elasrag; and Foundation student Nehad Al Akkad. 

“This achievement is dedicated to all our girls who have excelled at this tournament. Despite competing against some of the finest universities, they have consistently supported and motivated each other, having each other’s back throughout the journey. This experience has truly demonstrated that hard work pays off. Moving forward, we will maintain our humility, work even harder, and grow stronger as a team,” shared Eealyn. 

Cheah Joey (Year 4, MBBS) of the Women’s Basketball team also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of her team members. “The win is a testament to our unity, perseverance, and effort. We remain humble, appreciating the value of the journey and lessons we learnt. Second place reminds us that success is a shared experience, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to compete and grow together.” 

Other members of the team were Wong Ing Zhi (Year 5, MBBS), Ang Zi Yi (Year 5, MBBS), Tang Shung Yuiq (Year 3, MBBS), Lan Yuen Qi (Year 3, MBBS), Lai Man Xin (Year 3, MBBS), Miram Mohamed Farouk Ibrahim (Year 3, MBBS), Pooja Chandran (Year 2, MBBS), and Sri Santhiyah Murugapiran (Year 2, MBBS). 

According to second place winner of the Women’s 200m race Aya Ihab Ibrahim Eliwa (Year 3, MBBS), “I’m very happy to have put in my fullest effort to win the race. This achievement would not be possible without the help of my weekly NUMed Athletics & Cross-Country (NUAXC) athletics training.” 

Malika Amirgamzaeva, a Year 1 MBBS student who placed second for the Women’s 1500m race, was impressed at the high level of performance shown by the other universities. “I’m happy to be able to participate via NUMed’s athletics club in my first year of studies here. After the meet, I am now motivated to train more and hopefully challenge my fellow competitors better in the future,” she said.

The NUMed contingent also competed in other events, such as Men’s Futsal, Men’s Basketball, Frisbee (Mixed Category), Table Tennis (Women’s Singles) and Badminton (Mixed Doubles & Singles). 

Organised by the Asian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) Malaysia, MIVG is an annual national sporting event for students from different medical schools across the country. Conceived in 2009, the event aims to promote healthy lifestyles and foster a sense of camaraderie among Malaysia’s future doctors. This year’s MIVG was held on 7 & 8 October at Uptown Sports, SJK(C) Kwong Hon, and Padang Bola Sepak Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
