The Asian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) of Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) organised a QUEST: Intro Research Workshop on 16 December 2023. Chaired by the university’s Year 2 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students, Ong Paul Sherng and Rania Ezellya, the event was aimed at equipping students with vital research skills while fostering collaborative skills and encouraging networking within the research community.

The workshop was attended by 19 participants, who utilised this platform to hone their skills in research methodologies, including the formulation of research questions, ethical considerations, conducting data collection, and devising analysis techniques; access valuable resources, templates, and tools to streamline their research process; network and collaborate with fellow participants; and participate in stimulating discussions and practical exercises.

It kicked off with a succinct overview of the workshop that established a clear framework for the day’s proceedings. This was followed by interactive sessions featuring engaging Q&A sessions and collaborative group work, which paved the way for active participation and knowledge sharing among the attendees.

A highlight of the event was a proposal presentation segment towards the end, where participants were given the opportunity to practically apply the concepts that they had learned. This interactive session added a real-world dimension to the theoretical knowledge disseminated throughout the day. Overall, the comprehensive coverage of research methodologies, from foundational principles to practical considerations, coupled with the emphasis on interactive and practical activities, contributed to the workshop's effectiveness and left a lasting impression.

Both the chairpersons of the event expressed their delight in the success of the workshop, which provided comprehensive insights into research methodologies.

“The event equipped participants with essential research skills, emphasising the significance of meticulous planning and execution in the research process. The well-structured sessions facilitated by Associate Professor Dr. Kye Mon Min Swe showcased a depth of knowledge and expertise, while the interactive nature of the Q&A sessions and group work fostered a collaborative learning environment,” added Rania Ezellya.
