Shaping Medical Professionals for a Better Future in Healthcare

It is evident that there is a growing need to elevate global healthcare given the time in which we live. As such, there is a significant need to lay forth the knowledge and technology for the advancement of medical practitioners, as well as to prepare them to address and lead complex systems in order to protect the best interests of patients and communities. Therefore, it will be necessary for medical students to possess the theoretical and practical skills that will lay the groundwork for further career specialisation.

In its commitment to delivering high-quality medical education, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), an international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, plays an essential role in shaping medical professionals of the future and preparing them for the world of medicine.

The academic staff at NUMed is made up of highly skilled and experienced lecturers from a variety of backgrounds and specialisations, according to Dr. Antonio Villarivera, Associate Professor for MBBS at NUMed. “In order to prepare students and graduates to treat patients holistically, the university also uses integrated case-led education that is patient-centred,” added Dr. Antonio.

Additionally, pre-clinical and clinical medicine will be introduced to medical students, giving them the opportunity to actively learn about numerous facets of the human body as well as the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Medical students will be encouraged to further their knowledge of the clinical and medical worlds through hands-on experiences. This will provide them with a deeper grasp of the industry's most important problems and inspire them to consider how they might prepare for the future of medicine.

Medical school can be an arduous pathway, so it makes sense that medical students may experience study-related stress. Nevertheless, NUMed is constantly on the watch for any concerning signs.

“In terms of recognising students who are struggling, such as if they are not performing as well as they might have been expected, regular absenteeism, or if they seem to be constantly distracted in class, we’ll informally plan for a private meet-up and we’ll hear from the students on what their difficulties are, whether they are facing issues at home or in the university,” said Dr. Julie Platt, Associate Professor of Clinical Affairs at NUMed.

According to Dr. Julie, NUMed designates academic mentors for every medical student, who will offer support throughout their entire journey at the university. In addition, the Student Support Team will help students with pastoral difficulties, study counselling, and support for individuals who have language barriers.

The practice of global healthcare begins wherever one puts their feet. NUMed aspires to provide a vibrant environment that motivates students to pursue their careers as remarkable medical professionals with astounding talents.
