Surveilling Patients' Health Journeys via NUMed’s MBBS Programme

MBBS students in Year 4 have the opportunity to gain clinical experience in a real clinical setting while also tracking patients' journeys.

A cornerstone of the medical field is effective patient care. Aspiring doctors need to be able to deliver accurate diagnoses and treatments that can optimise the patients’ outcomes. An instrumental aspect of a student’s medical education is, therefore, the provision of a proper platform where they can be a part of the patients’ journey, and hone their skills and experience in this area.

With a noble vision to empower upcoming generations of medical professionals, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), an international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, offers world-class UK medical education on Malaysian soil. Its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme is a five-year undergraduate medical study that is identical to what is offered at the university’s Medical School in the UK.

In its commitment to shaping doctors of the future, NUMed plays  an essential role in delivering high-quality medical education and preparing students to be at the forefront of global healthcare.

“For one, NUMed’s academics consist of skilled and trained lecturers from  diverse backgrounds, with a number of them seconded from the UK campus. Secondly, the university uses an integrated case-led teaching approach that focuses  on looking at patients holistically,” shared Dr. Edmund LC Ong, Honorary Professor of Medicine at  NUMed.

The university’s MBBS course is an integrated programme that is hands-on. Students get to develop clinical skills from the outset, and meet real patients early in the course.

"During the course, we introduce students to clinical research methods and allow them to study topics of their choice. They also have plenty of opportunities to develop communication skills, information handling, reflective practice, decision-making, and attitudes necessary for medical practice," Dr. Ong explained.

Undoubtedly, Year 4 for medical students is somewhat crucial as they will be able to gain exposure to a real clinical setting while also monitoring patients' journeys along the way.

In Semesters 1 and 2 in Year 4, students will participate in an Advanced Clinical Experience, which consists of supervised longitudinal integrated clinical placements in medical and surgical specialities and primary care. They will follow a panel of patients through their medical care journey as part of this course. All aspects of clinical sciences are covered in both semesters, with a focus on investigative medicine, allowing students to gain a comprehensive understanding of health issues occurring in patients and how to handle them.

Year 4 culminates with an eight-week elective. “The elective allows students to gain medical experience almost anywhere in the world, including the United Kingdom. For many students, this is the pinnacle of their medical education,” added Dr. Ong.

The MBBS programme at NUMed is recognised by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom (GMC), the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), Medical Council of Thailand, Maldives Medical and Dental Council, Pakistan Medical Commission, Mauritius Higher Education Commission and approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
