The study of biomedical sciences lays the foundation for graduates to master a thorough understanding of human anatomy that underpins the development and basic functions of humans and other organisms. Biomedical sciences research also acquires insights into the pathological and pathophysiological mechanisms that cause diseases. As a result, it leads the way in the discovery of novel diseases, drugs, and medical technology.

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) is an international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, which offers the 2+1 BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (BMS). This allows students to complete their initial two academic years locally before heading to the UK campus for their final year.

The undergraduate programme is designed to link research and teaching. It provides students and graduates with a much-needed avenue to use their skills in a variety of fields, including but not limited to healthcare sciences. It is highly adaptable and dynamic.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the BMS programme, which provides graduates with in-depth understanding of the sciences relating to human anatomy and hands-on experience working in a real scientific laboratory, NUMed’s BMS graduates are highly sought after, not just locally but also globally. They are also given the opportunity to pursue numerous health science or non-health related disciplines.

NUMed is focused on moulding BMS graduates who possess all the necessary skills needed to shape the future of medicine and healthcare. The university believes that one of the most important skills to be honed is research abilities, which encompass hands-on practical laboratory skills, data analysis and presentation, critical analysis, and locating and comprehending recent scientific literature. Hence, both practical and theoretical knowledge are emphasised in BMS curriculum.

Academics at NUMed strive to provide students with in-depth knowledge in key areas that include biochemistry, genetics, physiology, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology, as well as hands-on working experience in a scientific laboratory. This equips BMS graduates with crucial skills such as research abilities, which include finding and understanding current scientific terms, as well as practical laboratory skills, data analysis and presentation, and critical analysis that can be beneficial in many real-world situations.

Rather than just a career in healthcare sciences, the BMS programme unlocks a versatile career roadmap for students upon graduation. Graduates can apply their knowledge in various health science fields. They will also gain skills that are indispensable in other fields. For instance, graduates of biomedical sciences may go into academia, business, or even law firms.

“A career in biomedical sciences makes a real difference in the world. The BMS provided by NUMed is a futuristic programme that has grown in demand and will continue to evolve as all medical advancements are significantly driven by biomedical sciences,” said Dr. Madihah Rushaidhi, Associate Professor and Dean of Biomedical Sciences at NUMed.
