Location
All fitness classes take place in our dedicated studios at the Sport & Fitness Centre on campus – so you can fit in your workouts around lectures. Classes run throughout the whole year.
You must pre-book your class to secure a space, otherwise, entry will be refused. You can book a class up to 5 days in advance.
You can check availability and book all classes online, via our app, and in person at the Sport and Fitness Centre reception. You can also book a space over the phone on 0191 208 7225.
Please ensure you swipe in using your smartcard at Sports Reception before your class. This will avoid any no show charges.
If the class you’re after is full, we definitely recommend joining the waitlist as spaces almost always open up. Class waiting lists are automatically managed by our online booking system.
If a class space becomes available (more than 12 hours before the class start time) all participants on the waiting list will be offered the space (by email) on a first-come, first-served basis.
The waiting list will be deactivated 12 hours before the start of the class. Any class spaces that become available after this point will be free for any member to book.
Please ensure you remove yourself from the waiting list if you can no longer attend the class or wish to stop receiving class space availability emails.
If you change your mind, you can cancel up to 3 hours before the class start time without charge. Late cancellation will incur a £2 charge.
If you book a fitness class but do not attend you will be charged a no show fee. To ensure that the number of 'no shows' is limited, our no show fee is £3.
Please cancel classes in advance when unable to attend. This saves you from being charged and gives another member on the waiting list the chance to attend.
Be mindful when it comes to booking classes and only book if fully committed to participating.
Many classes are full with waiting lists. Numbers significantly drop off on the day of the class.
Please arrive early to allow our classes to start on time to limit disruption and minimise the risk of injury (warm-up is a vital part of the class).
If you can, please arrive 5 minutes early so you can set-up.
You may be refused entry into the class if you are more than 5 minutes late or miss the warm-up.
We recommend wearing fitness clothing (leggings, shorts, t-shirt are ideal). Most importantly make sure you are comfortable.
You should inform the instructor of any medical conditions you may have prior to the start of the class.
To avoid distraction and help you get the most out of your class please turn your mobile to silent mode, or leave it in your locker.
There is no space for bags and coats in our studios, so please leave them in a locker.
Always push your limits and you will not plateau until you are leanest and strongest you can be for your body type.
Work at your own level – show your energy and passion.
Treat other class participants with respect.
Make sure you stay hydrated.
Smile, it will make everything seem better and feel like less effort!
Remember, it’s totally normal (and a good sign) if you ache a little after your first few classes. It means you made a deep connection in your muscles and are continuing to burn fat even after class has finished.
Try and get back to class within 48 hours, working your muscles again will help reduce any soreness you may be experiencing.
Taking a class between 2-4 times per week is the perfect amount for maintenance and overall cardiovascular health, strength and conditioning. Regularity is the only way to see serious, lasting results in your body.
Our group fitness classes are about enjoying yourself in a friendly, buzzing environment.
There's no need to bring any equipment with you to class. All mats, weights, balls, bands and any other props you may need during class are provided.
If there's anything you're unsure of how to use or can't find, just ask the instructor or a fellow class-goers. They are always happy to help.
Class and studio changes during COVID-19
We have put in a lot of additional safety measures to help keep you safe while using our facilities. These include:
- reduced capacity (to ensure social distancing is maintained at all times)
- compulsory pre-bookable class spaces (book online, via our app or at sports reception)
- increased cleaning stations, encouraging users to wipe down equipment before and after use
- equipment laid out to avoid participants gathering at equipment racks

Group fitness user responsibility and etiquette
We’ve put a lot of changes in place, but for these to be most effective we all must do our part.
Aside from respecting the government's safety guidelines, we ask that members using our studios help with cleanliness and hygiene best practices by adhering to the following training etiquette:
- if you feel unwell (fever/flu-like symptoms), please stay at home and stay safe
- pre-booking your class, space is compulsory
- regularly wash your hands or use the hand sanitiser provided
- please ensure to practice social distancing (2m) when in the studios
- clean all equipment before and after use
- gym/sweat towels are not permitted – please use blue roll provided
- we ask you to arrive no more than 5 minutes before your class (to limit crossover)
- personal items – we highly suggest bringing only the necessities
- water – we strongly urge you to bring your own water
- face masks – face coverings should be worn at all times except in activity spaces when exercising or when showering
- follow our directional signage throughout the Sport and Fitness Centre
- changing rooms, showers and lockers will be available, but we encourage all users to come ready to train
