Sports Scholarships and Funding

If you’re a committed athlete with a track record of achievement, you could be eligible for a sports scholarship or funding.

Build on your sporting success

We award sports scholarships and funding every year to students who:

  • have achieved highly in sports
  • want to build on their success and represent the University


You must be:

  • a current student in any year of study, or
  • an undergraduate or postgraduate applicant who has been given a place at Newcastle University

You must:

  • have achieved senior or age group representative honours at national and/or regional level in the last 12 months, and/or
  • be a member of the National Governing Body’s (NGB) performance squads, or equivalent

You must be committed to:

  • improving in your sport
  • representing the University in British Universities Colleges Sport (BUCS) events, where applicable

Sports scholarships

To be eligible for a scholarship, you must compete in one of the following Performance Clubs:

  • American Football
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Canoe
  • Fencing
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Lacrosse
  • Netball
  • Rowing
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Ski
  • Squash
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Waterpolo

To be a Sports Scholar, you must:

  • be a student at Newcastle University
  • represent the University
  • compete in British Universities Colleges Sport (BUCS) events, where applicable
Scholarship package

Regional/National/International standard within the last 12 months. Students should be part of a National Governing Body Performance Squad or equivalent.


Up to £10k

Services received
  • small group Strength and Conditioning sessions
  • access to medical services, including physiotherapy and sports massage
  • professional coaching
  • upgrade to Gold gym membership
  • mentoring/lifestyle support
  • athlete workshop programme covering topics such as sports physiology, nutrition, psychology, screenings, injury prevention and management, and lifestyle management
  • branded sports kit
  • sport science support
  • access to training facilities
  • performance video analysis

Sports scholarship applications are now open. The application deadline is Wednesday 7 October 2020.

USA Athlete Scholarships

If you’re an athlete from the USA applying to study at Master’s level, you could be eligible for our USA Athlete Scholarship. Successful applicants will receive a fee reduction on their Master’s at Newcastle, as well as access to all the services listed in the table above.

Sports funding

If your sport isn’t in the list above, or you’ve reached representative honours and need support to compete, fill in the Sports Funding Application Form. If you’ve been selected for higher representative honours, please wait until you know your competition dates before applying.

Applications for sports funding are open all year round.

Disability sports scholarships

If you’re a Newcastle University student who’s registered with a disability, you could be eligible for our Disability Sports Scholarship.

You’ll need to be currently representing the University in sports, or performing at a regional or national level for an external club.

We consider all applications for Sports Scholarship and Sports Funding. Awards are distributed at the discretion of the Performance Sport Team. All athletes must buy Silver Level Membership before they can receive a reward.
