Rugby Union
The intramural rugby union programme at Newcastle is one of the largest of its kind in University Sport.
Come and get stuck in to friendly yet competitive rugby. There will be plenty of opportunities to test the skills of your team.
Where and when
The season runs from October to June. All fixtures are played on Wednesdays from 14:00 onwards at our city pitches at Cochrane Park and Heaton.
League and cup competition format
Each team plays each other once in a league format, battling it out to become league champions.
A cup competition runs alongside the league campaign, as well as a 10s and end-of-season 7s tournament. This gives your team extra opportunities to claim some silverware and an intramural title.
At the end of the season, league, cup 10s and 7s champions come away with a shiny crystal trophy and winners medals, as well as a place in Intramural history.
Rugby referees’ society
At Newcastle we also have a rugby referees’ society, who provides fantastic support to the rugby union programme. The society recruits referees at the start of term, organises additional referees’ courses and assigns referees to every intramural fixture.

All Intramural sports fixtures at outdoor grounds will have a designated first aider. Note: a first aider may be covering multiple games so you may need to check other pitches in order to locate them.
In the event that there is no first aider available due to them treating another player for e.g. teams should inform the grounds staff of any injury or illness who will provide first aid treatment.
If an injury or illness occurs during training or friendly match in which a first aider is not provided teams should inform our grounds staff who will provide first aid treatment.
If a member of your team leaves our outdoor sports grounds and their injury or illness deteriorates resulting in attendance at a hospital, urgent care centre or doctors then we require the captain to submit the Intramural Accident Report form. This should be emailed to the Sports Development Officer or handed in at the University Sport and Fitness Centre.
Following any report of an illness or injury you will be contacted by the Sports Development Officer to see if any further assistance or support can be provided during any phase of recovery.
For head and concussion injuries, a SCAT test is available from the University Physio in order to determine a timescale for your return to playing sport. Costs for this will be paid for by Sports Services.
