Part Year Student Accommodation

Information for part year students looking to apply for accommodation

Applying for accommodation

If you're joining Newcastle University for part of the academic year, you won't be covered by our New Student Guarantee. However, you can still apply for accommodation using our online portal and we'll try to offer you a room.

When completing your application, our portal should recognise you as a part-year student. It will ask you to provide us with your expected arrival and departure dates which we'll use to match you to the most suitable contract period.

The contract periods* available are:

  • 11 September 2023— 7 January 2024
  • 11 September 2023— 21 January 2024
  • 24 January 2024— 9 June 2024 (Castle Leazes only)
  • 24 January 2024— 23 June 2024 (excluding Castle Leazes)

*Early arrival and late departure requests will be dependent on availability and cannot be guaranteed. Please do not travel to Newcastle without first having secured accommodation.

When applying for accommodation, you can choose any University-owned accommodation. Please note that undergraduate part-year students studying in semester one are unable to apply for managed partner accommodation with Unite (Wellington St Plaza or Newgate Court) as contracts are for the full academic year. If we have late availability in our rooms at Unite, we may make this option available for part-year students studying in the second semester.

If the system identifies you as a full-year student in error, please stop the application and contact us so that we can change this for you and avoid any delays in processing your application.

Processing your application

The Accommodation team will process your application after all guaranteed applicants have been processed. If we're able to offer you a room, we'll start to send you details of your accommodation from 31st August onwards.

If we can’t offer you accommodation

Please be patient and don’t panic if you don’t hear from us straight away! If we suspect that we won’t be able to offer you a room, we will contact you as soon as we can.

We will approach accommodation providers in Newcastle to find out their availability and will share this with you. Although private providers may not have accepted part-year applicants initially, this can change.

Private accommodation

Newcastle has a lot private student accommodation, including purpose-built student accommodation. If we can't make you an offer of accommodation, or if you'd prefer to look elsewhere, the Student Union's housing guide may help you with your search.
