Energy and Recycling

We encourage all residents to think about their environmental responsibility. Find out more about the steps you can take while living in accommodation.

As residents of our community, we strongly encourage you to embrace your environmental responsibility and show your support for the University's Environment Sustainability Policy. To make this easier for you, we offer a variety of resources and recycling options on-site. Here are a few simple steps you can take to reduce your impact on the environment:

Recycling

All student kitchens have bins for dry mixed recycling, glass, food waste, and non-recyclables.

Recyclable items should be sorted into the correct categories. Each of our Newcastle University-owned residences has clearly marked collection points to help you recycle correctly.

The main categories are:

  • Dry Mixed Recycling – paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tubs, trays, cans and cartons (clean and dry)
  • Glass – bottles and jars (empty and rinsed)
  • Food Waste – leftover food, tea bags, coffee grounds, and plate scrapings (no food packaging)
  • Non-Recyclables – anything that can't be recycled, such as crisp packets, plastic film, coffee cups and greasy pizza boxes

For more information or advice, stop by your accommodation reception or visit the University's Waste A-Z

Energy conservation

To save energy, turn off all lights and unplug electronics when they are not in use, especially before leaving your room. This includes your television, phone charger, and computer.

Water conservation

When you're not using the tap, turn it off and report any drips/leaks to Reception. Avoid letting the tap run while brushing your teeth.
