University-owned and managed partnership accommodation

We have accommodation options suitable for everyone, whether you're an undergraduate student living alone for the first time, or a postgraduate student coming to Newcastle with your family.

When choosing between University-owned and managed partnership accommodation, there are some differences to consider. Watch our short video to find out more.

University-owned accommodation
Contract

If you accept an offer of accommodation for a University-owned residence, your contract will be with us. Our contracts are legally binding. This means that once you've signed, you need to abide by our terms and conditions. Additionally, there are limited circumstances in which you can end your contract. One of these circumstances is if you're no longer a registered student. If you withdraw, we'll release you from your liability at the end of the .

Undergraduate contracts are 40 weeks, while postgraduate contracts are 50 weeks long. This allows you to leave your belongings in your room if you go away for the vacation periods.

Payments

A deposit is not required for University-owned accommodation, nor is a guarantor. Your rent will be due after you receive your first student loan instalment. We offer a range of payment options. You can choose to pay in full before your arrival, in termly instalments or monthly instalments. You can find our more about our and .

Living with us

University-owned accommodation is run and managed by us. This means that we will complete any repairs and carry out regular maintenance. Your village will have a dedicated space. This is where your ResLife Coordinator, supported by ResLife Student Assistants, will be on hand to help you settle in and run social events. You'll also have 24/7 access to the University Estates Security Service for your peace of mind.

Managed partnership accommodation
Contract

To be able to fulfil our , we work with a range of managed partners. These are providers of purpose built student accommodation who have an agreement with the University to reserve rooms for our students. The accommodation is owned and managed by the private provider.

You apply for managed partner accommodation through us, but you accept the accommodation contract with the provider. Their contract is legally binding, and their terms and conditions apply. There is no notice period in your contract; once you accept it, you will be responsible for paying your rent until the end of the contract, even if you leave early or move out.

Contracts in our managed partner residences are between 40 and 44 weeks. Use the filters on pages to see which residences are managed partners, and what contract length they offer.

Payments

Some of our managed partnership providers request an advance rent payment. Additionally, you may need to provide a guarantor. A guarantor is someone, usually a parent or a guardian, who agrees to pay your rent if you miss a payment. If you cannot provide a guarantor, managed partnership accommodation may not be available to you.

Each partner has their own payment terms, please see our  for more details.

Living with us

In our managed partner accommodation, the day to day running of the building is carried out by the provider. This includes cleaning, repairs, and maintenance. They offer extended reception opening hours, and 24-hour support. You'll still have access to our ResLife team at one of the University’s student villages and the Accommodation team can help with any queries you might have.

Local accommodation providers

Newcastle has many accommodation options, including private houses and accommodation built for students. This offers great variety, but not all accommodation is created equal. Make sure you do your research before signing a contract. Our colleagues at the Student Advice Centre have lots of housing advice if you're considering this type of accommodation.

If required, we may occasionally secure additional rooms with private providers. If we do, we ensure that we only ever work with providers of safe accommodation, that meet all the up to date safety regulations.
