Science Careers Outside the Lab: Business & Finance

Careers in business and finance might not seem like a natural option for science students, but the analytical and communication skills developed during a science qualification are highly sought after in these types of role.

This session will help you:

  • learn about the range of job roles for science graduates in business and finance
  • chat with Newcastle University graduates working in this area
  • understand how to promote the value of your science qualification when applying for roles in business and finance

Abbie Carr, Associate, PwC

I recently graduated with a Master’s in Medicinal Chemistry in July 2020. During university, I focused my spare time on travelling, working part time in a restaurant, and taking part in a summer research project. I also won an award for the best MChem Chemistry final project in my fourth year. I started my role as Audit Associate in September 2020 at PwC Newcastle and currently study part time with PwC towards an ACA chartered accountancy qualification. I also joined PwC’s social and well-being team alongside my role.

Alex Craig, European Financial Accountant, Mindray

I studied a Master of Chemistry at Newcastle University, graduating in 2016. During this time I also completed Study Abroad in El Paso, Texas. Following my graduation, I worked for over three years at EY’s Cambridge office in an Audit and Assurance role and also completed the ACA qualification to become a chartered accountant. I currently work as a European Financial Accountant for Mindray, a global medical instrumentation (including ventilators) developer based in China with global revenues in excess of $3 billion USD.

Alexander Kirkman, Audit Principal, National Audit Office (NAO)

I joined the NAO in early 2017 after studying Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle. I worked primarily on auditing the International Development budget and the Rural Payments Agency, and to my knowledge am the only person in the office’s history to have camped on a Lake District fell as part of an audit! I have held other roles auditing the BBC, Seafish UK, DEFRA and the Environment Agency, and am on the office’s Mental Health First Aider and Sport Relief committees. Most recently, I worked on a study assessing the quality of MoD-owned sties of special scientific interest, passed my final exams for chartered accountancy, and am now working in one of the audit lead roles in the newly merged Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Hamid Mehdi-Zodeh, Customer Technical Manager, Volac International Ltd

I’m a former postgraduate in Chemistry from Newcastle University. I’ve been in professional full-time employment over the last eight years, mainly in technical, non-laboratory and customer-facing positions. Having completed an integrated four-year master’s degree in Chemistry at University College London, I moved to Newcastle University to study a PhD programme within the Doherty Group in the Chemistry department in inorganic organometallic chemistry, which centred around phosphorus-based catalysis. One aspect of my education I always enjoyed was using my chemistry knowledge outside of the laboratory environment, such as presenting my work in various forums, training other students, participating in problem-solving exercises and other areas. The PhD programme consistently provided such opportunities, which further reinforced my ambition to pursue a technical-oriented career outside of the laboratory.

My initial foray into employment was with an international company in the chemical sector, where chemicals were applied for ‘water treatment’ purposes in different industries (eg oil & Gas, Desalination, and IWT). Here, my technical background in chemistry was crucial in enabling me to quickly get to grips with the company products and processes and subsequently use this platform in different ways: to train customers, which included international travel and lead important projects (eg Project Manager for developing a technical website and introducing monitoring device the chemical products).

I’m currently working for a dairy nutrition company as Customer Technical Manager, a fast-paced role requiring both technical attention to detail and multi-tasking. The customer base includes leading sports nutrition and confectionary brands. My main day-to-day responsibilities include dealing with customer queries/complaints, managing customer specifications documents, holding in-person or remote conference with customers and leading projects.
