Squash
Our intramural squash sessions give students and staff the opportunity to play in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Whether you have previous experience or want to learn, it's a great way to get involved.
Weekly coached sessions
If you’re looking to play squash in a fun, relaxed environment, then our coached sessions are for you. Sessions cater for all abilities and all equipment is provided. You can:
- play against other members (staff and students)
- receive coaching from a qualified coach and member of our University Squash Club
- enter into our monthly social tournaments
This session is free to all Sport and Fitness Centre members who hold a Sport or Sport & Fitness membership, or can be paid for on a weekly basis of £4 per session. Sessions have a limited capacity so you must book your place.

- Tuesday evenings, 17:30 – 19:45
- Term time only

- Sessions are bookable up to 14 days in advance

Squash leagues
If you’re looking for something more competitive, then why not join our Intramural squash leagues.
Squash leagues run on a termly basis and are open to all staff and students, with fixtures organised for days and times that suit you.
Multiple divisions with up to 8 players per division means we can cater for several ability levels, with promotion/relegation at the end of each term.
A Sport & Fitness Centre membership is required in order to join our squash leagues.

Entry for the October - December 2023 squash box leagues is now open.
League games start week commencing 30th October and close week commencing 11th December.
A Sport & Fitness Centre membership (minimum level = Sport membership) is required to play in our leagues. Please ensure you have purchased your membership prior to games commencing.
To enter, email the Intramural Officer with the below information:

- Previous playing experience/level (this will help place you in the correct division)

All squash box league players must be a member of the University Sports & Fitness Centre, a minimum of a SPORT level membership is required.
The match
- All matches are best of 5 games, you must play all 5 games.
- All games are first to 11.
- In the event of 10-10 players should play sudden death.
- Players should referee their own match.
Scheduling matches
- It is each player’s responsibility to organise their own matches.
- Contact details can be found for each player on the Intramural squash website under the contacts tab.
- Players must offer 3 options when requesting a match, these should be on different days and times where possible.
- Once a day and time has been agreed, a court should be booked at Newcastle University Sport & Fitness Centre, Squash Courts
- Scores should be submitted to the Intramural SPort Officer by email: tom.brearley@ncl.ac.uk
- If a player has made repeated contact with another player and has received no response after 2 weeks then a walkover can be claimed. Please inform the Participation & Events Officer and provide evidence of the contact attempted.
- If a player does not show up for a match after it has been scheduled then the following will apply:
- 1st time:
- 1 point deduction
- Walkover concede
- 2nd time:
- 2 point deduction
- Walkover conceded
- 3rd time:
- Removed from the league
- Walkover conceded
Point scoring
- Points for winning the match: 1
- Points for playing: 1
- Points for winning a game: 1
- Points for a walkover: 5
- Points for conceding a walkover: –1
- E.g. of points total
- win 5-0, total points for winner = 7, total points for loser = 1
- win 4-1, total points for winner = 6, total points for loser = 2
- win 3-1, total points for winner = 5, total points for loser = 3
Promotion, relegation and awards
- Top 2 players promoted.
- Bottom 2 players relegated.
- In the event of new players adding to the league and to ensure we have players playing at the correct ability level promotion and relegation numbers may change.
- Each player who wins their league will receive a prize
The Sports Centre Supervisors and the Sport and Recreation Officers at the Sport & Fitness Centre are first aid qualified. They will be your first point of contact for any injuries and incidents.
If you or a friend leaves the Sport & Fitness Centre and an injury or illness; which occurred whilst playing squash, deteriorates resulting in attendance at a hospital, urgent care centre or doctors then we require submission of an Intramural Accident Report form – this should be emailed to the Intramural Sport Officer or handed in at the University Sport & Fitness Centre:
- For minor injuries – reports must be submitted by 09:00 the following day
- For medical emergencies – notify the Intramural Sport Officer immediately, a report should then be submitted by 09:00 the following day
