Whether you’re a seasoned player, you’ve been out of the game for a while or you’ve never played before, we’d love you to get involved.
5-a-side Football
*New Women's 5-a-side League - Starting Thursday 9th February*
Where and When
All games are played indoors at Newcastle University Sport & Fitness Centre, Sports Hall 2
Every Thursday in term 2, starting from 9th February
Games kick off at 5pm or 6pm
League Format
Up to 6 teams will compete in a weekly league playing each other once to determine the standings for the finals night played on the last week of term.
Fixtures are 50 minutes long (2 x 25 mins) and are refereed by a qualified FA referee
At the end of each term the winning team will receive a winners trophy and place in the Intramural hall of fame

11-a-side Football
If you're looking for something more competitive but still packed with fun then why not join our Intramural 11-a-side team who compete in a local Sunday league against teams in and around the Newcastle area. Our qualified coach will enhance your skills and with good links to the University Women's Club there's opportunities to progress up the pathway and represent Newcastle in BUCS.
Our Intramural 11-a-side team train and play:
- Weekly training at Longbenton Sports Ground every Tuesday 6:30-8pm on our 3G pitch
- Fixtures every Sunday, with home games played at Cochrane Park Sports Ground on our 3G and grass pitches

5 a-side Rules
- Games are 50 minutes. 2 x 25min halfs
- Three points will be awarded for a win and one point for a draw.
- A £5 referee’s fee is required from both teams prior to the start of the game.
- No jewellery may be worn on the pitch.
- Any injuries resulting in bleeding must be dealt with immediately. No bleeding players are allowed on the pitch.
- The referee has the authority to sin bin players for up to 5 minutes or send players off for misconduct or continuous infringement of the rules if necessary.
- If a team fails to turn up, the match is awarded as a 10-0 walkover to the opposing team. The team failing to show up will also have 3 point deducted from their league table points.
- If a team fails to turn up to play on two occasions, they will be immediately withdrawn from the league, with no refund given.
- Any team failing to show up for a fixture is responsible for paying the full referee’s fee of £10
- The ball can not go above head height.
- Sliding tackles are not permitted. Infringements of this rule results in a free-kick. The referee has the authority to sin bin players for dangerous sliding tackles.
- The goalkeeper cannot pick up a back pass from their teammates, unless the ball has been played through another teammate. Infringements of this rule results in a penalty.
- When a goal is scored, play is restarted from the keeper.
- The keeper can throw or kick (ground or hands) the ball out at all times (in play or dead ball situation)
- Players (attackers and defenders) are allowed in the box and goals can be scored in the box. Goalkeepers are also allowed to come out of the box and play the ball.
- All free kicks are direct and defending players must be 2 metres from free kicks.
- Players taking a penalty, having addressed the ball, may only take one step before striking the ball.
- If a player kicks the ball over the dividing partition (but below “head-height”) play is restarted with a kick in from the side by the other team.
- Substitutes are roll on, roll off.
- All matches must be played on the date and time as stated on the original fixture list.
- Maximum of 9 players attending on a matchday (no more than 4 subs on the bench)
Term 2 2022-23
Registration for the Intramural 5-a-side league is now open
Registration operates on a first come first served basis with space available for 6 teams
- No team entry fees
- All players must have a minimum of a Newcastle University SPORT membership
- Fixtures to start on 9th February
- £5 per team referee fee, paid directly to the referee in cash
