University-Owned Accommodation

Purpose Statement

Accommodation Services encourages you to live a safe and healthy lifestyle. Our policy aims to inform and educate you on items that are prohibited in order to protect your own safety and that of fellow residents and to safeguard University staff and property.

Other items that sit outside the prohibited list, deemed to cause nuisance or disruption to fellow residents, or to be unsuitable for your accommodation, will be considered under this policy.

Scope

The policy applies to all prohibited items found in University-owned Accommodation

Prohibited items

There are a number of items that are restricted for use in University Accommodation and these are outlined in our Residents Handbook and Tenancy Terms & Conditions, alongside other specific policies, all of which can be found on our webpages. Examples of prohibited items, including, but are not limited to:

  • heaters (including electric clothes dryer)
  • illegal Substances and Psychoactive Substances (see Alcohol and Drugs Policy)
  • candles
  • LED strip lights/fairy lights
  • fireworks
  • incense sticks
  • deep fat fryers
  • portable cookers, kettles, toasters (except for those provided by the Accommodation Service)
  • halogen lamps
  • portable damaged equipment (see Portable Appliance Testing Policy)

Prohibited items: items that are restricted for use in University-owned Accommodation

Our responsibilities

  • to encourage a safe lifestyle for all residents
  • to remove items that are prohibited within our accommodation (this includes within bedrooms, kitchens and shared areas)
  • to issue a removal notice and to store items until the end of your tenancy,
    unless the item is animate, perishable or illegal to possess where disposal
    applies (see Alcohol and Drugs Policy)
  • to notify you of suspected prohibited items delivered via the postal system
  • to inform and educate you of the consequences of possessing prohibited items within University-owned Accommodation; this includes:
    • the health and safety risks
    • the legal position and Police involvement (see Alcohol and Drugs Policy)
    • the academic consequences (where appropriate)

Your responsibilities

  • not to bring in or have delivered via the postal system prohibited items into University-owned Accommodation
  • familiarise yourself with the policy
  • seek clarification from our Customer Services Team at your Village reception
  • not to bring the University, its reputation and legal position into question by possessing prohibited items (see Alcohol and Drugs Policy)
  • to report any damaged portable appliance to your Village reception
