Student Car Parking Policy

University-Owned Accommodation

Please note, we are not yet accepting accommodation applications for 2024-25. We'll contact you when the portal opens.

Purpose Statement

Accommodation Services is committed to supporting the University’s Sustainable Travel Plan by advocating sustainable transport options for students. We maintain the offer of a limited number of resident car parking spaces at Bowsden Court and Castle Leazes. We also have a limited number of accessible bays at Castle Leazes, Kensington Terrace, Marris House, Park View and Windsor Terrace. This policy is a shared service initiative with Estates & Facilities.

Applicability and scope

Our parking policy covers the arrangements and regulations concerning the parking of motor vehicles and bicycles in the private grounds of the University’s accommodation. We are using the term motor vehicle to cover any mechanically or electronically propelled vehicle, intended or adapted for use on roads and includes a motorcycle.

Resident parking

We have a limited number of resident parking spaces at Bowsden Court and Castle Leazes. There is no resident parking at any of our other accommodation. Charges apply and permits can be booked for a full academic year or term and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Permits are issued for a designated resident parking area at a specified residence only and are not valid for parking at any other accommodation or on campus. The permit is only to be used by the permit holder.

There is no provision for short-term parking for students during the academic year. Students moving into a residence part way through the year should contact reception to check availability and charges.

Disabled students and students with temporary mobility impairments

Newcastle University is committed to ensuring that disabled students can access the University campus and residences. As we are a city-based campus where spaces are sought after, we encourage you to enquire about availability without delay. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Blue Badge holders

Permits for Blue Badge holders are issued free of charge. Please contact the accommodation reception directly for more information. Contact details can be found here. Once you have your permit you can park in a designated resident accessible parking space at your residence, provided your badge and permit are visible.

Students with temporary mobility impairments

Please contact the Customer Services Team at your accommodation reception. We will assess all requests on an individual basis.

Public parking

Public parking is available Monday to Friday 17.00 to 00.00, Saturday and Sunday 06.00 to 00.00 at Castle Leazes, Marris House, Windsor Terrace, and various campus locations. Public parking bays are clearly marked by signage. Parking tariffs apply and can be paid via the Pay by Phone app.

Parking agreement and conditions

Permits must be displayed in the windscreen and vehicles must be parked in a marked bay, within the designated resident parking area at the specified residence on the permit. Vehicles must not be parked in any other area as this will result in enforcement action.

By entering and remaining on the property of the University, you agree to the conditions indicated on the parking notices displayed and are contracted to be legally bound by them.

If you breach any of the stated conditions, you will be issued with a Parking Charge Notice (PCN) and agree to pay the Parking Charge of £60 within 28 days, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days. When a Parking Charge becomes due, an application may be made to the DVLA for the registered keeper details.
