Investing in Open

Support for Open Research at Newcastle University.

Newcastle University is committed to encouraging and creating an open research environment, and demonstrates this by its support for open research initiatives which help to make our research available without barriers.

Financial support is provided to a variety of open research platforms, services and tools through formal memberships, subscriptions and one-off fees which help facilitate the shift towards a culture of open research practices.

This support demonstrates our commitment to the N8 statement on reform to scholarly publishing and the Jisc initiative to provide sustainable, affordable open infrastructure solutions.

Diamond Open Access Journal Publishing

The Open Journals Collective (OJC) is a collection of diamond open access journals, publishing across all subject disciplines. The initiative launched in January 2026 to provide long-term sustainability of non-profit university-based journals publishing. There are no fees to read, and there are no author fees to publish in any of the OJC titles. These titles include:

Diamond Open Access Book Publishing

The Open Book Collective (OBC) initiative enables libraries and other institutions to support a range of traditional and innovative open access book publishers by paying a single supporter fee. The OBC aim is to support the production and dissemination of open access books, providing open infrastructures, such as repositories and book publishing software, that make high-quality open access books more widely discoverable.

The Open Book Collective is a registered charity and is an output of the COPIM project, and a partner on the ongoing Open Book Futures project. Both projects are funded by the Research England Development fund and Arcadia

OBC publishers include:
