New: check Library space availability before you visit

24 February 2026

Library space availability update

You can now see how busy each Library is before you arrive. The new space availability checker shows live availability by level and area, helping you choose the right place to study.

Where to find the checker

Go to the Library website and select your Library under 'Libraries and locations'.

Each library page now includes a space availability checker.

What the checker shows

The checker gives a clear view of how busy different areas are.

Current space availability checker example

This example image shows:

  • Availability by level and area, shown by using coloured squares
  • Percentage figures when you hover over a coloured square (for example, 74% free)
  • Last updated time, so you know the information is current

These details make it easier to judge how a space will feel.

Why this update matters

User feedback showed that you valued being able to see how busy the Libraries are before your visit.

A Mystery Shopper in 2025 said:

“I usually like to check the library website beforehand to see how busy it will be. I think this feature is really helpful especially for people with anxiety like myself, as a busy library can feel daunting sometimes.”

We also received feedback asking for more precise data.

One comment from the feedback wall suggested:

“Would love to be able to see a live count of how many people are in the library (rather than just ‘quiet’ or ‘fairly busy’ as they are very broad terms).”

Start using it now

The new update gives you a clearer picture of Library spaces, so you can plan your visit with confidence.

You can explore it now on the Library website.
