An exhibition showcasing a study of data from Jesmond, Newcastle and the North East, examining the past, present and future of social statistics.

Now open

Town and Gown on the Tyne explores the demographics and social profiles of the areas in which they live, in areas around Newcastle University. The exhibition invites students to re-think what they know about where they live in term time.

Curated and researched by Murray Dick, Senior Lecturer in Multimedia Journalism from the School of Arts and Cultures, this exhibition explores life in Jesmond, Newcastle and the North East, in terms of public data, in a visual story comprising 10 mounted posters alongside material from Newcastle University Special Collections & Archives.

The design methods used comprise an embodied approach to data visualization, that is intended to engage, spur discussion, and to lead to improved retention of data over time.

The display will run in the Special Collections & Archives exhibition area, Level 2 of the Phillip Robinson Library - from 16th May to 9th November 2025.
