If you're considering becoming a Peer Mentor, I encourage you to go for it! It's a rewarding experience that allows you to make a meaningful impact on new students' lives.

Being a Peer Mentor

I decided to become a Peer Mentor because I wanted to be part of the supportive community that helps new undergraduate students transition smoothly into university life. I recognised the value of having a friendly face who understood the difficulties of first year during my own transition and wanted to offer my experience and guidance to help others feel welcome and confident.

As a Peer Mentor, my role involved providing academic and social support to new students. I reached out to my mentees before the start of their programme, arranged an initial meeting during the induction period, and checked in with them in the first semester. I offered advice, share resources, and created a safe space for them to discuss their concerns and goals. A mentee can expect their Peer Mentor to be approachable, empathetic, and knowledgeable. They'll receive tailored advice and support to help them navigate academic challenges, integrate socially, and adapt to the cultural aspects of university life.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

Being a Peer Mentor has developed several transferable skills, such as effective communication, active listening, empathy, problem-solving, and leadership. Additionally, I've learned to manage my time efficiently and work collaboratively with my mentees and university staff, skills that are valuable in various professional and personal contexts.

If you're considering becoming a Peer Mentor, I encourage you to go for it! It's a rewarding experience that allows you to make a meaningful impact on new students' lives. You'll gain valuable skills, build connections, and experience a sense of fulfilment from helping others.

Being nominated and winning Peer Mentor of the Year was an incredible honour. It felt amazing to be recognised for my efforts and the positive impact I've made on my mentees. The experience was both humbling and motivating, reinforcing my commitment to supporting others and continuously improving as a mentor.
